Smashing Boxes, Durham, NC
A three building warehouse complex originally constructed in the early 1940's as a bottling facility for Canada Dry, Budd Piper Roofing Company was the last owner/operator until it was purchased by the Smashing Boxes software company. Utilizing the main warehouse building as their headquarters, the remainder of the complex was renovated into three rentable office suites, which provided ample space for the company’s future growth.
The client was very interested in maintaining the industrial aesthetic of the warehouse, by using the 18’ ceiling height for a two story reception space and mezzanine that hosts conference rooms and an open office collaboration space.
Between the conference rooms, a ramp and stair descends into the main open office space. This space is bathed in natural light by five restored skylights. An office block separates a multi-purpose/lounge area at the back of the warehouse and a stair leading to the roof terrace. An additional storefront section was added, to provide two large windows to the exterior patio.
