Harriet's Place  -  Durham, NC

Harriet’s Place is the renovation of a YWCA built in 1953 in Durham’s Hayti district.  This mid-century modern building is a historical landmark. Before it's deterioration, the building was a vibrant community center and is recorded as a resource for Durham’s African American, civil rights movement.

The building’s new purpose is to provide affordable housing for this neighborhood and once again be a hub for this community.

There will be (15) units, (2) of which are ADA.

This design maintained all the original rooms and placed the new stairway out side the original building, providing a glowing beacon for the neighborhood.

This approach was not approved by the historical review, who felt the building's exterior should not be changed.
